When I was on the research committee for preconception health with the Denver Environmental and Public Health office I realized how many of us plan for almost anything else in our lives but pregnancy. For example, many of us have already made plans for retirement way before giving any thought to having children. And yet we will have children way before we reach retirement.
I remember when I was in college I always thought, “Oh I won’t have kids in the next 10 years so there is no need to even think about the topic at all”. Well 8 years later still no little bundles of love on the way but I think about it a whole lot more now. Now that I am going to be 31 this year I feel like I am behind because my husband and I want 3-4 kids. Isn’t it funny how that works? First 10 years was the minimum and now 8 years later I am behind……
We all think we either won’t have kids or won’t have them for many years down the road. Or we begin to think we should probably get started now because we aren’t getting any younger. However, more often than not many of us are caught by surprise.
Regardless of how our “plans” work out we are rarely preparing for “if” and “when” we start to have children. In life plans change all the time and things hardly ever go as planned anyway!
Whether we are planning to have children a few years down the road, start tomorrow, or realize you are pregnant; it is never too late to take care of your health so that you are giving your baby the best start to a long and healthy life.
Every day is another day to make 1 small change that will make you healthier for YOU. Then “if” and “when” you are pregnant you will have the confidence that you have established the best foundation that you can for your baby’s lifelong health.

- Eat 1 more vegetable today
- Start walking 5 minutes a day
- Get quality sleep
- Learn how to relax and have down time
